Like Morrissey singing for a pop combo that are equal parts The Jacobites, Jan & Dean, and Death In June, The Knit Separates are the red-blooded stepchild of the Jeweled Antler legacy. Before The Skygreen Leopards, The Ivytree, Thuja, Teenage Panzerkorps, or any of the other well known projects from this beloved psychedelic enclave, The Knit Separates were the seminal spark that bridged the journeymen's noisy salad days to their idyllic middle ages. All the elements are here, varying fidelities grinding against each other, encrypting the field recordings of stoned evenings on the beach and campfire love songs festooned with sundazed poetry and guitars chiming like church bells. The lilting vocal melodies of Jason Honea soar elegantly over Glenn Donaldson's arrangements. The Knit Separates made spiritually charged, avant-jangle music on cassettes and Radioshack tape reels from 1996-2001, they toured Europe once playing for a total of about seven people and also once opened for The Jacobites in SF. They blazed an artful failure that was ignored by virtually everyone, save the odd positive review from the likes of Ptolemaic Terrascope. Though, not unlike the manic romantic shambles of forbears like Eyeless In Gaza, The Knit Separates music remains a unique and brightly burning pyre that warms the soul, once you allow yourself to get close to it. As a diehard fan once poignantly remarked "The Knit Separates will embarrass the untrue of heart".
