about

The Flemish psychedelic voyagers, Silvester Anfang, published their first cassettes in 2004, on their own private imprint, Funeral Folk. The name "Silvester Anfang" is taken from the Conrad Schnitzler composition originally released as the introduction to the album "Death Crush" by the seminal Norwegian Black Metal band Mayhem. This name, and it's origins, does shed some light on the original inspiration for the band, mixing the music of Krautrock and outsider art with the aesthetics and themes of Black Metal. Covered in black and white collages of bleak imagery and foreboding messages, their tapes revealed sensitive and rambling jam sessions of collective improvisation, mostly sounding like a darker version of the kind of naive free folk that was happening at the time. Over the years, Silvester Anfang continued refining their craft. Soon, a feeling had emerged that the band was outgrowning it's previous dimensions and perhaps a name change would be appropriate. Wishing to stay somehow loyal to their old moniker and again taking cues from the ancient Krautrock ways, they simply changed their name to Sylvester Anfang II. This cassette reissues two albums from a very pivotal period of the band. Both were released on Skulls of Heaven, the short-lived label of frequent Funeral Folk collaborator Clay Ruby. "Levend Op De Brandstapel" was the last release under the name Silvester Anfang, and it shows the band just awakening to it's new style and starting to stretch out into the full blown acid rock territories that they were soon to conquer. "Live Op De Braderie" was a very early release as Sylvester Anfang II, and it sounds like an incredibly advanced free rock session, featuring Clay Ruby on organ. These releases are the beginning of a great period for the Funeral Folk collective, including some wonderful vinyl releases and a handful of epically damaged tours, festival appearances and recording sessions. Currently, after a brief hiatus, it seems that Sylvester Anfang II is back again and has reached yet another peak in their creative development and are experimenting with several new ideas, no doubt whatever comes of this will be inspired, but some people will always remember 2004 - 2008 as being the golden age of Funeral Folk.
