about

We are very excited to present the rare and tremendous talents of Russian post industrialist Alexei Tegin and his traditional ritual music ensemble Phurpa. In the mid 90's Tegin began to refocus his studies and artistic ambitions, finally settling on the pre-Buddhist religion of Bon and it's highly specialized sonic rites, he eventually realized an excellent collection of recordings called "Gyer - Sacred Tibetan Music Of Bon Tradition ." Wishing to capture the spirit of a genuine Tibetan monastery atmosphere and the interactive energy generated by a monastic choir, Tegin formed Phurpa to help perfect this complicated recreation. Though Phurpa do employ the wide variety of traditional Tibetan instruments such as the nga drums, rolmo cymbals, telescopic dunchen horns, dunkar shells, and more, what the listener most often hears on a Phurpa recording is the ongoing overtone chanting, called "rgyud-skad", or the Tantric voice. This type of singing requires an immense amount of discipline and practice, and it is clear that Phurpa have put forth much effort in perfecting and representing these ancient practices as authentically as possible. Though it has been alleged that Phurpa actually perform this material in an even lower key and at a slower pace than tradition dictates, the results are all the more entrancing and hallucinatory.
