Organic Industrial beats straight off of a dungeon dance floor in Greece, Penelope's Fiancé gives us nearly an hour of mesmerizing tracks; moist with high-minded ceremony and club grit. Not unlike a primal Wax Trax fever dream, this album represents a highmark in the recent flow of cassettes from this crew. For the last few years they have laid out a slippery and dynamic body of work, which has been known to cast a similar dense shade on Discomforting Sounds (the unusual album from 2018, on Clan Destine) and the collaborative project Magdalena's Apathy's Tendine D'Achille. On Psychopompos, we dive more deeply into the aqueous nature of these workings, with careful attention to sinewy melodies swimming upstream against the incessant pulse of machine and its wake. The mysterious production style proves to be a fittingly tense atmosphere for the ontological agonizing that occurs in the themes of these pieces. We are thrilled that Penelope's Fiancé offered us their most pensive, and personal accomplishment to date.
