about

This new tape by Horrid Red is a collection of out-of-print and unreleased material, including the Pink Flowers and Silent Party singles plus a wide array of the bonus materials, outtakes, and experiments from the Pink Flowers era through the making of their upcoming sophomore full length masterpiece Nightly Wreaths. This cassette is nice and long, rich with variety, and features some of the most far-out productions of Edmund Xavier and Clay Ruby to date. Once simply known as a Militant New Wave unit, Horrid Red are beginning to carve out an repertoire that far surpasses the typical clichés of Post-punk and New Wave; becoming a hyper-dimensional cinematic pop sensation, not unlike such boundary-pushing icons as Roxy Music, The Blue Nile, Japan and Talk Talk. The track sequence for Banquet in Blue is mostly chronological, so the listener is treated to a gradual progression from the gritty punk of the early Horrid Red singles to the shimmering decadence of the near future. If you have not heard Horrid Red before, this is a great place to start, as it gives you a glimpse at all their different facets, like the nasty hypnopunk jams which remind you that these are also the same guys from the lo-fi punk institution der Teenage Panzerkorps, the pounding dance beats, the cryptic instrumental numbers, the frail musculature of Xavier’s guitar which endlessly weaves itself through brightly colored soundscapes like Robert Smith playing a classical Indian raga, and all of this constantly raging under and giving way to the alternating stoned drawl and commanding bark of their charismatic vocalist/ warrior poet: Bunker Wolf.
